General Track Rules

Most running events share the same general rules, which are described below.

When running around the bend, athletes must not step on, or cross their lane line on the left hand side of their lane. This will result in the athlete being disqualified during championship events.

In unlaned, middle distance races, athletes are not allowed to obstruct one another or jostle. Accidental contact is sometimes acceptable.

For hurdles, there is no penalty for athletes knocking over hurdles, providing they have made an attempt to clear them. Deliberately knocking down a hurdle or touching them with the hand will lead to disqualification.
