Circular Throw events include shot put and discuss. There are 4 official roles for these events:
- Recording (Key Official)
- Circle
- Spiking
- Retrieving
If necessary, some of these roles can be combined however events run much smoother and faster if there are 4 officials.
The Recorder is responsible for recording the distances thrown by each athlete, and letting athletes know when it is their turn to throw.
The Circle official is responsible for ensuring if the throw is legal.
For shotput, the Circle official should be positioned so that they have a clear view of the shot and the athletes neck. If the shot leaves the athletes neck during delivery it is a foul. They are also responsible for ensuring the athlete does not overstep the front of the circle, or leaves the circle in the front half. Both of these will result in a foul.
Once the throw has been spiked and ready to be measure, the Circle official pulls the tape taut to the centre of the circle. The distance is measured from the inside edge of the circle. Distance is measured to the closest centimetre, rounding down.
The Spiking official places to spike on the mark made by the shot closest to the circle.
If the shot lands outside of the sector lines, it is a foul.
The Retrieving official should wait until the shot has stopped before picking it up. Implements must never be rolled or thrown back.
